How To Turn Your Music Into A Full-Time Income!

Look, you're an artist, I'm an artist, but in reality, which one of us is actually going to make it? The number 1 question we need to ask is are we actually built for this? Are you doing this as a hobby, or as a means to feed your family?

We first need to remind ourselves that this is a business. So many artists are walking around in Lala Land assuming that their music will go far because they have a "good voice" or "passion." Don't get me wrong, a good voice and passion are critical but not as important as the business aspect of music as a whole!

You can no longer associate your artist name with your personal life as your artist name has become the name of your business!

Let's look at someone like Russ. Russ has been able to build a career in the music scene while maintaining his independence and owning all his masters. You might ask, how does one get in a position like this without a label? It's all about understanding the things behind the scenes when it comes to a label! Labels are simply doing things that human beings are completely capable of doing themselves.

The most significant difference between you and a label is the cash flow factor. It's quite likely that you have nowhere near the amount of money as the label, and that's why artists are so quick to sign! This isn't to say that you cannot sign to a label, you just need to understand the business so that you have the ability to negotiate and leverage the labels! Russ used this exact strategy and now he's able to negotiate with labels and base the conversation on what he wants, unlike you and me. Russ was able to use his business skillset while removing his emotions from the situation!

Considering we've covered the fact that this is a business:

You read this far so I'm assuming I haven't offended you yet which is great, you understand what I'm saying! On to my next point... So now that we understand that we're a business, we need to consider whether or not we've been acting like one. Let's pretend your music is a restaurant for a moment. What do restaurants typically do to get people in the door? They hand out flyers, make online ads, send coupon specials in magazines, etc. My point is that they're marketing themselves on a daily basis! Every single coupon book that goes out turns into a little mini salesman for the business! Hell, have you ever picked up Chinese food and they quickly stuffed a menu in the to-go bag? They just tricked you into taking an ad home that you might plaster on your fridge for a week, it's genius!

"Well, why are we talking about this? This has absolutely nothing to do with music!" It has everything to do with music! You are your own ad and you need to be posting yourself everywhere by any means necessary! Pretend you're that little Chinese restaurant competing with a bunch of big corporate restaurants!

The great part about music is that there's truly not that much competition in terms of other small artists. Most would say the opposite, but it's not true! There's a bunch of people calling themselves artists but they'll forever be too lazy to show up and do what it actually takes to be huge.

What do you see as more important? The business aspect, or the artform? Reply to this email, you might teach us a thing or two!

It's Not Your Camera, It's Your Lighting!

If you're an amateur content creator it's likely that you've had some huge issues getting the right camera angle. Have you ever considered the fact that you might actually be having a lighting issue?

What you likely didn't know is that these Tik Tokers and Youtubers are actually just using a ring light and an iPhone! As long as you have the iPhone cinematic mode and a nice light you could LITERALLY make your own home movie.

Artist of the week: Jasiah

Are you a complete psychopath? Then you will also love Jasiah! If you paired XXXTENTACTION and Ski Mask this is precisely what you would get. Jasiah mixes hip hop with screamo in the most constructive but memeish way you could ever imagine.

If you're looking for a gym playlist just put Jasiah on shuffle and go about your workout, no questions asked.

Freestyle Friday: Central Cee

Look, I don't really love UK Rap but this one actually got my ear. When he first started talking I didn't even know he was from the UK but then he started rapping and my jaw dropped. As they'd say; this is fire fam!

These British rappers are really on the come-up!

Notable Lyrics:

In London I'm verified/

In NY I'm valid/

12 hours away, I'm MIA/

I could pull up on DJ Khaled/

Nick Grant

Do you think he actually has a connection to DJ Khaled though? That's saying a lot!
